    This presentation examines a few of the misguided aphorisms of learning and misconceptions about the brain from popular culture -especially those that seem to persist even after neuroscience shows evidence to the contrary. These are replaced by the cognitive and learning science supporting Bloom’s Taxonomy as the key to creating effecting learning and training experiences.

    There are a whole number of urban legends about learning and neuroscience that just refuse to die, e.g., Left Brain vs. Right Brain personality traits and learning, Learning must occur during certain periods of development, we only use 10% of our brain, perceptions about fixed learning styles, etc. We'll dive into some of these issues and discover fact from fiction. 

    Presenter Bio:

    James Bennett

    James Bennett has been a leader and innovator in education technology for almost two decades. He has published papers on education reform through technology, and has authored several college textbooks on media design. As a professional educator, he has managed teams of instructional designers for 36 colleges and served as a subject matter expert in learning for the corporate sector. He is also the lead national instructor on adaptive learning for the Association of Talent Development (ATD).

    His presentations at professional education conferences have included topics such as innovations in education technology and the cognitive neuroscience of learning. In the area of adaptive learning, James has participated in the single largest rollout of adaptive learning systems in education, developed and implemented a successful pilot for integrating adaptive and teacher-led instruction, and initiated the concept of multicourse learning path, and introduced them to two of the largest adaptive products on the market. In the adaptive learning courses implemented under his guidance, he has seen a documented increase of 20 percent in learner performance and mastery of competencies. 

    He has also written articles and a guide for educators that are considering adaptive technologies. James holds a bachelor of fine arts from Ball State University, a master of fine arts from the University of South Florida, and a number of professional development and technical certifications, including HTML, JavaScripting, and Online Tutoring, from the University of Oxford

    The personality assessment industry is estimated at $2bn per year and the choice can be overwhelming. In order to simplify the decision in the face of so many alternatives, we deploy our trusty cognitive shortcuts and revert to the same small selection, making trade-offs between depth, validity, cost and ease of use. 

    In this session we invite you to step back and critically examine personality assessments through the lens of evaluative bias. Through a presentation of new research, discussion with other coaches and sharing practical experience, you’ll learn:

    • How evaluative bias in personality assessments affects the individual, as well as the culture of the organization. 
    • A new approach to assessing personality, built on research that validates the measure of adaptive and maladaptive behavior at both ends of the personality dimensions. 
    • The benefits of helping coaching clients examine how their personality traits emerge in different contexts. 

    Presenter Bio: 

    Sarah Tennyson

    Sarah Tennyson is a coach, facilitator and consultant specializing in the development of people and organizations. With formal training in organizational psychology, she runs an independent practice in New York City to provide high quality, personalized solutions to financial and professional services organizations. Prior to founding Tennyson LLC in 2015, Sarah was Senior Director at Moody’s Analytics where she led a global team of consultants. She brings 15 years of experience working with clients in over 20 countries.

    Sarah holds an MSc Occupational Psychology and a BSc (Hons) Psychology. She is accredited to use a number of personality psychometrics and is a Strategic Alliance Partner for Lumina Spark and the Lumina Learning suite of assessments. Regularly running along the river and around Central Park keeps Sarah’s mind and body in balance. When not on the move, she’s a keen reader and book club member and throws herself into all that city life offers including theatre, music, eating out and, most recently, trapeze classes.

    In an Action Learning session following the WIAL method (World Institute of Action Learning), a group of 6-8 participants develop leadership skills by working together on solving a complex problem. Questions are the driving force of Action Learning, and empower participants to discover the root of problems and to unlock hidden knowledge.

    Mies de Koning (actionlearningnewyork.com) is a Certified Action Learning Coach and a trained Action Researcher. He is part of the team that won the "2017 best implementation award" at the Global Conference of the World Institute for Action Learning in Shanghai. Mies is an expert in Social and Organizational Learning Methodologies. Fascinated by personal leadership theory and group dynamics,Mies started his career as a group therapist in Child Psychiatry. As a Program Director in Higher Education at Avans University, he led curriculum development and staff for the Bachelor in Socio-Educational work for 10 years.

    Do you understand your ethical and professional responsibility as coaches, and as sponsors of coaching? Join us for a panel discussion where we will explore the concept of Duty of Care and navigating the complexities around mental health issues in coaching.

    It has been estimated that 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. has suffered from mental illness within the last 12 months. Further, in a study conducted by the Congressional Research Service dated January 2018, the prevalence of mental illness amongst the U.S. adult population was estimated at between 26.2% and 32.4%. 

    Research in the field of coaching has found that between 25% and 50% of clients presenting for coaching meet criteria for clinical mental health, and that the incidence of personality and mood disorders is 10-15% and 20% respectively. Importantly, for those undertaking executive coaching, studies suggest that the levels of distress within executive populations are more than double those found the general population. 

    This raises a number of important questions relating to our ethical and professional responsibilities as coaches, and as sponsors of coaching, including:

    • Do you understand the nature of your Duty of Care as a coach?
    • How do you reflect on the limitations of your competence, and the boundaries of your role as coach?
    • Are you alert to the possibility that coaching, in certain circumstances, may cause psychological harm?
    • What ongoing education and training do you undertake in relation to the identification and assessment of mental health issues?
    • How do you recognize the red flags indicating a need for therapy or that coaching is not the appropriate intervention? 
    • What is your strategy for dealing with, and referring, in such situations, and how do you identify your personal point of referral? 
    • How do you manage such issues when coaching within an organization, which raises complex issues surrounding confidentiality?
    • As a sponsor of coaching, how do these issues affect you? How do you handle situations where there is a potential mental health issue?

    Charles (Chuck) Schaeffer
    Chuck is a New York-based licensed psychologist and career advisor who has spent the last 12 years helping individuals, couples, professionals, and organizations tap into their strengths in order to overcome challenges and thrive in the face of insomnia, stress, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health difficulties. Dr. Schaeffer has created and led mental health training programs to improve professional’s clinical competencies at organizations including the Seleni Institute, Estee Lauder, JP Morgan Chase, Postpartum Support International, New York University, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the Motherhood Center of New York. He currently serves as clinical consultant & supervisor to organizations including the Seleni Institute, Huddle, New York University, and the Motherhood Center of NY.

    Kalzien Van Vliet

    Klazien is a human capital professional with an MA in Social and Organizational Psychology from Leiden University in The Netherlands and a Graduate Certificate in Organizational and Executive Coaching from NYU, currently working as Organizational Development Consultant at Macquarie. In this role Klazien manages the executive and skill-based coaching portfolio across the Americas region. She also develops and delivers bespoke learning solutions to address business needs and leads the psychometric assessment interpretation training and support in the organization. Klazien is a member of ATD NYC and ICF and co-chair of the ATD NYC’s Coaching SIG. 

    Angela Wright

    Angela has over 20 years global professional experience including more than 10 years experience as a consultant, facilitator, researcher, coach and coach supervisor. Prior to her full-time consulting career, Angela practiced as an attorney, where she specialized in disputes around professional responsibility, breach of duty of care, conflicts of interest and ethical issues. She was also part of the writing team responsible for drafting the world’s first ISO (International Organization for Standards) aligned Guideline for the training of coaches and the provision of coaching services. As a previous Board member, Angela currently serves as the Director of the Coaching Center of Excellence and Co-Chair of Coaching Supervision Programs at ATD NYC.

    In this webinar we'll examine how to evaluate learning programs, specifically exploring the link between designing learning content and the eventual impact on workplace performance. 

    How do you show the value of learning? There’s no easy, single answer because learning is complex and every organizational context is different. But some constants remain. And most agree it is about more than attendance in class or completion rates. 

    This webinar will put learning evaluation under the spotlight, and explore what it really means to show the value of learning. Few in the professional development field have spent as much time as Dr Will Thalheimer exploring what makes learning effective. In this webinar we'll also our focus on evaluation – how do we know that learning has taken place and transferred into performance?

    This new multi-level approach to evaluation is a method that ranges from knowledge building, through task competence to effective performance. We'll examine how to evaluate learning programs and explore some new, deep thinking about the links (& those lacking) between designing learning content or experiences, the eventual impact on workplace performance and what objective methods we're using to assess impact.

    Will Thalheimer is a learning expert, researcher, instructional designer, business strategist, speaker, and writer. Dr. Thalheimer has worked in the learning-and-performance field since 1985.

    He was the project manager for the first commercially-viable computer-based leadership simulation, The Complete Manager. He led the Strategic Management Group’s product line, Leading for Business Results, increasing revenues fourfold. He has trained managers to be leaders at numerous Fortune 500 companies, teaching such topics as leadership, persuasion, conflict resolution, and business strategy. He has led change management efforts and workshops.

    In 1998, Dr. Thalheimer founded Work-Learning Research to bridge the gap between research and practice, to compile research on learning, and disseminate research findings to help chief learning officers, instructional designers, trainers, e-learning developers, performance consultants, and learning executives build more effective learning-and-performance interventions and environments.

    His clients have included giant multinationals, e-learning companies, government agencies, and institutions of higher learning.     Senior leaders and talent development professionals overwhelmingly agree that innovation is a top priority and essential for success. Yet very few are satisfied with the level of innovation happening in their organizations.

    ATD (National)’s research on the role of training to build innovative organizations shows that innovative organizations share these traits: an innovative and committed executive team, being good at implementing change, being effective at cross functional teamwork, and having a published innovation strategy. And while our research shows a direct link between innovation and organizational success, the reverse is not always true: successful organizations are not necessarily innovative.

    As the demand for training on teamwork, communication skills, leadership, and change management continues, programs on innovative thinking or managing innovative teams are in the least demand and rarely offered to staff.     Join coaching pioneer and global thought leader Professor David Clutterbuck for a 3 Day Master Class on the Fundamentals of Team Coaching.     Team coaching is rapidly gaining traction as a powerful tool for helping leadership teams improve performance. It has wider application however, for all kinds of teams, at all levels in an organization. Most large organizations have invested in coaching individuals. Increasingly, however, it is recognized that the performance issues of both organizations and individuals are systemic. As the bridge between individual and organizational learning, teams are the most practical unit to integrate individual and systemic perspectives, to manage the complexity of co-working, and to respond to the shifting needs of organizations. While it is not surprising that team coaching has emerged as a growing practice, experience in the field suggests that coaches are adapting approaches to meet this demand with mixed success.     WEBCAST DESCRIPTION

    Each year organizations implement learning and HR solutions -- but with minimal performance change. Why this failure to have an impact? Often it is for two reasons: Organizations do not understand that performance change requires the active involvement of management and that it usually requires implementing multiple -- not just single -- solutions.

    The strategic process designed to maximize the performance of people and organizations is called Performance Consulting. Making that improvement happen is the role of a Performance Consultant.

    But  what does a Performance Consultant actually do? How is this different from more traditional L&D roles? What benefits do Performance Consultants bring to the learning function and the organization?

    In her June 20 webcast, Dana Robinson will bring her extensive performance consulting experience to Performance Support SIG to answer those questions. By participating you will be able to:

    Dana Robinson has long been recognized as a major thought leader in the areas of performance consulting and strategic partnering. Dana founded and led her consulting firm, Partners in Change, for almost 30 years. During that time she partnered with hundreds of HR and L&D functions as they transitioned from a tactical to a strategic focus. She is also the co-author of seven books (including the highly acclaimed “Performance Consulting: Moving Beyond Training”) and has received numerous awards.  She currently is partnered with Handshaw, leading their performance consulting service line.

    There seems to be a pervasive belief from learning & development professionals that you can’t truly measure the impact of soft skills training, yet we see organizations live and die as a result of the poor quality of decisions, service, leadership and other “soft” behaviors.

    The hard skills of technical, product, IT or manufacturing training appear to be more straightforward and easy to measure using tangible data and business results. However, content such as leadership, communication, diversity and team-building appear to be less tangible and difficult to measure – but in reality, they should not be any different. What’s different is the questions you ask and the expectations for behavioral application. Measuring the ROI of soft skills is doable!

    In an article on LinkedIn, Jack & Patti Phillips put it this way:

    “Soft skills programs should perform just like any other learning program. If the learning is designed to be applied, it should be applied in the work environment with an action, activity, or behavior change. If it is designed to drive business impact, then it should drive business impact which is a consequence of that activity. From the impact, the ROI can be calculated.”

    At the end of the day, soft skills are what help us achieve success. Soft skills help us to build strong, agile and innovative organizations.

    As a result of this webinar, participants in this webinar will be able to:

    Most organizations create microlearning assets to support learners when they are applying what they have learned and to act as quick reminders on mobile devices when learners are on-the-go.

    Unfortunately, our learners frequently don’t adopt this. No matter how well designed, unused microlearning is not worth the investment.

    But what if we can maximize the investment that we make in these short learning bursts while also increasing the effectiveness of our virtual training solutions? The key: focus on supporting all moments of learning need with microlearning, instead of just on-demand informal situations.

    Join us to experience and approach for crafting and delivering engaging microlearning and incorporating it into virtual classroom design. You will view examples, analyze what does and doesn’t work, and create a strategy for ensuring your microlearning content gets used over and over again.

    In addition to experiencing virtual classroom exercises delivered via microlearning, you will leave this session with techniques to help you:

    • Move away from “guides and slides” and adopt the microlearning approach to virtual classroom design

    Lisa Downs, M.S. Ed., ACC (Associate Certified Coach), CPLP (Certified Professional in Learning and Performance) is a leadership development consultant, facilitator, and coach, specializing in helping technical professionals and executives work at their best and achieve their desired business results. Lisa began her career in education in 1996, and has worked in corporate learning and development since 2003. 

    Lisa’s previous corporate roles have included working in learning and leadership development with the technology company EMC, The Boeing Company, PEMCO Mutual Insurance, and T-Mobile USA. She also has six years of experience working in the accounting industry, supporting CPAs with their learning and executive leadership development.

    While a member of the Association for Talent Development (ATD) Board of Directors, Lisa served as the Chair of the National Advisors for Chapters Committee in 2013-2014. She is also a past Chair of the ATD Chapter Recognition Committee and a past President of the ATD Puget Sound Chapter.

    She facilitates, and led the design and development of, ATD’s Expert Coach™ Program. Lisa also developed and facilitates ATD’s Essentials of Identifying and Developing Your High Potentials series, and facilitates both their online and in-person versions of the Coaching Certificate and Creating Leadership Development Programs Certificate courses. 

    Lisa is the author of Time Management Training (with a new edition released in 2016), Listening Skills Training, and Negotiation Skills Training in the ATD Workshop Series, as well as the TD at Work Managing Learning Programs. She is based in the Seattle, WA area.
